The existing exterior courtyard space is renovated. The courtyard space is an integral exterior gathering space that functions as a vital extension of the church sanctuary. The appropriate redevelopment of this historic courtyard was critical for the functional requirements of the church.
Though the property is not currently listed as a designated historic resource, it meets all necessary criteria for listing.
Therefore, all proposed modifications were designed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the preservation and treatment of historic structures, to maintain and preserve the integrity and value of the historic property.
The architect envisioned this exterior courtyard as a natural landscaped space, complimentary to the modernist architecture. It is also worth considering the relevance of the building that preceded the present modernist construction.
Definition of Gathering Space, focal element and shade
The exterior courtyard space has an appropriate shade structure complimentary to the iconic modernist architecture.
It is a tension framed fabric shade structure designed to cover and accentuate the exterior space.
The structure is equipped with A/V equipment to facilitate exterior gathering events such as wedding receptions and memorial services. The structure is high enough to frame (not obscure or conflict with) the iconic sanctuary.
The structural columns are integrated to effectively provide for a column free exterior space. The structure has an elegant, dramatic and inspiring architectural shape and form, complimentary to the architecture. The structure is an original (customized) construction.
Site Security The existing courtyard space is susceptible to damage from vandalism. Appropriate site lighting, fencing and gates were considered in addition to a new site surveillance camera system.
Building Systems With the removal of the trees, the existing drain lines were properly repaired or replaced. The phone and data lines were evaluated with new conduit installed for future use.
Trees, Landscaping, Shade and Planters The existing planters were reevaluated to optimize plantings. A new water wise irrigation system was installed. The stairwell leading to the basement of the Education Building along the east side of the courtyard was infilled. Since the west façade of the Education building is exposed and contributes to the courtyard’s heat gain by reflectance from this wall, a suitable planter along this façade was the best solution to soften the glare and reduce the heat island effect.
Lighting Appropriate site lighting of the paths, buildings and trees was installed for security, scale and architectural presence.
Paving The existing hardscape was evaluated for damage and ADA compliance. The ramp leading to the north parking lot was too steep and was replaced. The concrete stairs were spalling and were replaced. Details match the original design, for continuity and integrity.
Benches Appropriate (anti-vandal) bench seating needs were coordinated within the overall site plan.
