Why Preservation Matters: A historical perspective
on Architecture in Redlands
Understanding our history is critical to progress. Architecture embodies our rich culture and history. When great buildings are removed or lost, our sense of place is changed irrevocably. If enough buildings are removed, a town loses its identity and soul. Our historical heritage is embodied within the buildings of Redlands. The high style of architecture proves that our founders and benefactors were cultivated, sophisticated and magnanimous. They were interested in creating an architecturally and culturally rich town.
The Value of Preservation: understanding and applying the principles of historic preservation
Our historical heritage is embodied within the buildings of Redlands. Our benefactors were giants who contributed generously their wisdom, grace and culture to give our town an elevated, cultivated quality. Preservation of our buildings honors the high value of heritage our founders established as a cultivated city. Old buildings are a privilege to work on because they have a story to tell. Often unique artifacts are found in walls, between layers of floor, in attics and basements that help tell the story. Preservation ultimately is about stripping away the ill-conceived treatments and inappropriate layers to reveal the genuine (original) buried beneath. Preservation gives the building a new and enhanced life.
Green Building: Sustainable Architecture
Environmentally responsible and resource efficient building design. Architecture that minimizes the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency in the use of materials and energy. Goal: to effectively reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment and increase comfort and livability. Consistent with AIA sponsored Architecture Challenge 2030.
