PROJECT
Known as the Ames-Westbrook house, this picturesque Queen Anne Victorian mansion built in 1888 is a designated resource within the City of Riverside Historic District.
SolutionS
A Certificate of Appropriateness was required by the City of Riverside Cultural Heritage Board for project approval. The project included the restoration of this unique and highly prized historic landmark and conversion from residence to Bed and Breakfast and Special Events Venue. Extensive retrofit work to foundation and third floor structure was required to accomplish the attic conversion to habitable guest rooms. New dormers were added to meet required natural light and ventilation requirements. Preservation efforts involved restoration of the entire building exterior, as well as much of the interior architecture. Original double-hung windows were made functional again, and historic detail that had been lost was replaced. Old photographs and forensic analysis of the building provided clues as to the form of these original historic features. All preservation and rehabilitation work employed the guidelines set forth in the Secretary of the ReInterior’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings.
